There are some things that make a pastor cuss (well, almost). For example, one thing that causes this pastor to bite his lip is consumeristic Christians. In other words, Christians who come to church because of what's in it for them. You know who they are. They use the church like a tube of toothpaste; when they've squeezed all they can out of it they just toss it in the can and move on to the next tube. They usually have a Brad Pitt level of commitment to their church. In other words, as long as their getting more out of the relationship than they're giving, they're in love. But, as soon as they feel like they're giving more than they're getting; they bolt for a new squeeze. It's no wonder marriage is in the shape it's in when so many people obviously have no clue what commitment is all about.
I've seen my share of consumeristic Christians and I've started compiling a list of words that I think describe them well...
1. Immature...Like a baby, they always cry when they don't get their way.
2.. Shallow...They have th emotional and spiritual depth of Paris Hilton.
3. Needy...They dominate your time & if you can't take their call, they bolt.
4. Self Absorbed...Life always revolves around them.
5. Wimp...They don't have a lot of spiritual backbone.
This list is by no means exhaustive. I'm sure I'll come up with a new word the next time I cross paths with a consumerstic Christian. If you think of a word I didn't, let me know and I'll add it to the list.
My passion is to radically impact this culture for the Kingdom of God and that's no job for wimpy consumers. It's going to take Christ follower's with a deep, mature, strong & selfless faith to represent God in this world. We're looking for a few good men & women to help us literally change the world. If you're up for the job, jump on board. But, if you're a consumer, you might want stay on the porch with the children & leave the heavy lifting to those with some strength.
I just grabbed my kids and flew off the porch, and I got a backache from the heavy load and lack off exercise! I confess; I've had these traits you have listed. It's the American way all yeasty through the church. I know a way to motivate these superficial people that I sometimes act like: preach the WORD. Spend time in the WORD. Feed these starving, fat consumers the WORD.
I love your posts. Keep it up. God Bless your passion to be fruitful!

Keep your passion, Pat! In a beautiful quote about passion, Oswald Chambers once said that "we need to learn this secret of the burning heart. Suddenly Jesus appears to us, the fires are kindled, we have wonderful visions, then we have to learn to keep the secret of the burning heart that will go through anything…
If the Spirit of God has stirred you, make as many things inevitable as possible, let the consequences be what they will. We cannot stay on the mount of transfiguration, but we must obey the light we received there; we must act it out. When God gives a vision, transact business on that line, no matter what it costs."
Amen!
